Here to remind you to embrace a child like spirit this Summer…

When was the last time you created a Summer Bucket List? If you're anything like me, the last time I actually sat down to plan out all the exciting things I wanted to do during summer was when I was about 12 years old. Nowadays, summer looks a bit different from the carefree, no-school-all-summer vibe of childhood. But let me tell you, taking the time to plan out these fun summer activities could be just what you need to infuse some joy and purpose into this sunny season.

As adults, it's common to fall into a mundane routine. Perhaps your routine is serving you well, or maybe you're itching for a change. Either way, crafting a Summer Bucket List could be the perfect way to shake things up, inject some variety, and reconnect with your inner child. It's a chance to challenge yourself, step out of your comfort zone, and infuse your summer with excitement and adventure.

Not convinced yet? What about the fact that trying new things is correlated to stimulating your brain activity? Novel experiences activate different areas of the brain, leading to increased neural connections and cognitive flexibility. This can enhance memory, problem-solving skills, and overall brain health. Or maybe the increase in happiness and longevity that’s associated with seeking new experiences? Novel experiences often bring excitement, enjoyment, and a sense of accomplishment. They break the monotony of routine and infuse life with energy and vitality, leading to increased feelings of happiness and overall well-being. How about the burnout combating effects that come along with engaging in new activities? Engaging in new activities prevents boredom and burnout by keeping life interesting and engaging. It adds variety to your daily routine, making it less monotonous and more fulfilling.

I could go on and on about the cognitive advantages of introducing new and thrilling experiences into your life. But what really gets me excited is the opportunity for reconnecting with your inner child. Grab a set of colored pencils and tap into the spirit of your younger self. What were their dreams for the future? What adventures did they eagerly anticipate for summer? When was the last time you bounced on a trampoline, went flower picking, or spent an entire day poolside with friends? It's these simple moments and adventures that can reignite a much needed sense of wonder and playfulness in our lives.

I get it, life can feel a bit complicated these days, but time keeps on ticking regardless. Remember, you have the power to shape your life into what you want it to be. Now, I'm not saying that creating a Summer Bucket List will magically transform your entire existence, but I'm here to cheer you on and encourage you to give it a shot. You might just be surprised at the positive impact that a little effort and a sprinkle of fun can have on your life.

Coffee helps me claim my day.

Hello, my name is Taylor, and I have a confession to make. Waking up at 5:08 AM every weekday is the most important thing I do for my mental health. No, this isn’t about “sleep optimization” or “having discipline” or whatever other jargon is usually thrown out when people talk about the benefits of waking up early. For me, waking up early is 100% about claiming my day. Let me tell you more.

I’m someone who can get a little caught up in second guessing how I am spending my life. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my job. I feel inspired every single day, I feel so grateful to be living this life… AND... sometimes I wonder if I am meant to go live in the woods, live off the land, and homestead for a living instead.

While these existential thoughts occasionally drift through my mind, I'm aware that simply living in the woods wouldn't inherently bring me fulfillment. That being said, I recognize the importance of taking small daily actions to assert control over my life, rather than feeling like a mere pawn in a larger capitalist system. I.e.: Claiming my day.

So what exactly is claiming your day? Claiming your day means doing something each day to remind you that this is YOUR life. It is putting on some music and cooking your favorite dinner on a Tuesday night even though there’s laundry that needs to be done. It is waking up an hour earlier and spending that time drinking coffee and reading your favorite book before you have to go to work. It is spending extra time in the shower just to feel a couple more moments of warmth before you have to go back to your life. Claiming your day is about being intentional about living your life FOR yourself, even if that’s only for a few minutes in your busy day. Claiming your day involves embracing what brings you joy while also still attending to the necessities for survival and growth in our world.

I claim each weekday by setting my first alarm to 5:08 AM. Waking early grants me precious moments to simply exist. Though coaxing myself from slumber sometimes takes a few snooze cycles, once I'm up, I pose a crucial question: What do I truly desire now? While my routine often follows a familiar path, I cherish the freedom to deviate. Mornings are my sanctuary to deliberate on what I WANT to do, rather than drifting through on autopilot.

I've discovered that in the early hours, I crave sipping coffee, practicing yoga, and reading a few pages of a good book. Yet, should the urge strike to draw, whip up a lavish breakfast, go on a run, or return to bed, all options are equally valid.

Claiming my day has changed my relationship with the world. Amidst the whirlwind of life's uncontrollable forces, I find solace in moments of pause I create for myself.

So, how can you claim your day today?
